UPCAT, ACET, DLSUCET, USCET — how to prep for college entrance in Cebu

The four big college entrance exams Cebu students take. How they differ, when to start prepping, and which review centers help.

Sige te, this one is for the parents of Grade 11 or Grade 12 students. The college entrance exam season hits hard — usually August to October — and most families only start prepping in May or June. Lisod gyud kung walay plano.

Four big exams cover most Cebu students\' options: UPCAT, ACET, DLSUCET, and USCET. Here is the plain-English version.

UPCAT — University of the Philippines

What it is: The entrance exam for all UP campuses. UP Diliman (Manila), UP Cebu, UP Mindanao, UP Visayas (Iloilo), and the smaller branches all share the same UPCAT.

When: Usually August or September. Watch upadmissions.up.edu.ph for the exact dates.

Format: 4 subtests — Math, Science, Language Proficiency, and Reading Comprehension. Plus your SHS grades (UPG, the UP Grade) factor in.

Cut-off: Brutal. UP accepts around 10 to 15% nationwide. Cebu kids often pick UP Cebu (Lahug campus) which has lower demand than UP Diliman but is still competitive. Pass rate hovers at 1 in 5 to 1 in 7 of qualified applicants.

Tuition once in: Almost free under the UP Tertiary Education Subsidy for most families. The savings make the prep worth it.

ACET — Ateneo (Ateneo de Manila)

What it is: The entrance exam for Ateneo de Manila University. Note — Ateneo de Cebu (a separate K-12 school) is not the same as Ateneo de Manila; ACET is for the Manila campus.

When: September to October. Cebu test centres are usually at Sacred Heart School or another partner school.

Format: English, Math, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning, and an essay. The essay matters more than most parents expect.

Cut-off: Around 30% acceptance for qualified applicants. Most Cebu students applying are top-of-class from Sacred Heart Ateneo de Cebu, USC, or Don Bosco.

DLSUCET — De La Salle (La Salle Manila)

What it is: De La Salle University\'s entrance exam.

When: November to January (multiple test dates per year).

Format: Math, English, Science, and an essay. Heavier on Math than ACET.

Cut-off: Slightly more accepting than ACET. Around 40% acceptance.

USCET — University of San Carlos (Cebu)

What it is: USC\'s own entrance exam, taken by most Cebu students who want to stay local.

When: Multiple sessions, usually August to March. USC has the most flexible scheduling of the four.

Format: English, Math, Science, Filipino, and an interview for certain programs (Med Tech, Engineering, BS Bio).

Cut-off: Highest pass rate of the four (around 60 to 70% overall). But specific programs like BS Med Tech, BS Bio, BS Psych, and BS Architecture have much higher cut-offs — sometimes only 10 to 20% get in.

A simple prep plan

Grade 11, second semester

Pick the 2 or 3 schools your child will realistically apply to. Don\'t scattershot all four — each exam costs ₱600 to ₱1,500 and the schedules sometimes overlap.

Download free UPCAT sample exams. Sit your child for ONE full timed mock. Get a baseline. Don\'t panic at the score — the goal is to know where to focus.

Summer between Grade 11 and Grade 12

Start review classes if you go that route. Most Cebu review centers run a 2-month summer intensive (June to July) or a longer 4-month weekend program (May to September).

Top review centers in Cebu:

  • MSA / Brilliant Skills — strong UPCAT track, multiple Cebu branches.
  • Center for Math and Science (CMS) — Math/Science specialist, good for engineering-bound students.
  • AHEAD Learning Systems — Manila-based but with Cebu satellite for full review.

Plus several smaller local ones — check the catalog via /tesda-cebu/ filtered for review-center entries, or chat with us with your specific budget and target schools.

Grade 12, August to October

Exam season. Most kids take 2 to 3 exams. Make sure your child:

  • Sleeps 8 hours each night the week before each exam.
  • Eats real breakfast on the day. (Don\'t skip kasi nag-iinit ang tiyan, te.)
  • Arrives 30 minutes early to the test centre.
  • Brings ID, calculator (where allowed), pencils, and water.

Backup plan

Honest reality: most Cebu students don\'t get into UP, Ateneo, or La Salle. The backup colleges in Cebu are excellent — USC for most programs, USJ-R for business, Cebu Doctors\' for medical-aligned tracks, Cebu Normal University for education. Apply to your top reach + a strong local sure-bet. Para sigurado, te.

One last thing

Bawal ang panic. The UPCAT is one Saturday morning. ACET, one weekend. Your child\'s future is not made or broken in 4 hours. Many kids who fail UPCAT thrive at USC or USJ-R and end up doing better professionally than UP graduates from the same cohort. Keep the perspective.

Frequently asked

Which is the hardest of the four?

UPCAT is generally considered the hardest because UP's acceptance rate is the lowest (around 10 to 15% nationwide). ACET and DLSUCET are demanding but more accepting. USCET has the highest pass rate of the four — but for in-demand programs (Med Tech, BS Bio, BS Psych), the cut-off is still competitive.

When does my child start prepping?

For UPCAT — ideally Grade 11 second semester. For ACET / DLSUCET / USCET — Grade 12 first semester is fine, since exam dates are later in the school year. Starting Grade 10 is overkill for most kids and risks burnout.

Are review centers worth it?

For UPCAT — yes, especially if your SHS school does not run an internal review program. The exam is unusually paced and tricky. For ACET, DLSUCET, and USCET — review centers help but aren't make-or-break for kids already in strong SHS programs.

How much do review centers cost in Cebu?

Full programs (covering 3 to 4 exams) typically run ₱8,000 to ₱25,000 for a 3-month course. Pure UPCAT-only review is usually ₱5,000 to ₱15,000. Weekend-only programs are cheaper but more spread out.

Can I prep without a review center?

Yes, te. Free practice exams are widely shared in Cebu SHS Facebook groups. The big four schools (UP, Ateneo, La Salle, USC) also publish official sample exams. The discipline is the hardest part — sit through a full mock exam every weekend for 8 to 12 weeks.
