Developmental pediatricians in Cebu — how to find one and what to expect

A developmental pediatrician is usually the first stop when you suspect autism, ADHD, or a learning difference. Here is how to find one in Cebu.

Branded card with the title 'Developmental peds in Cebu'

Te, kung naa kay nararamdaman nga lahi ang anak mo — speech delay, hard time sa eye contact, big tantrums beyond toddler-normal, hyperactive — the first stop is usually a developmental pediatrician. Lisod gyud sila pangitaan sa Cebu kasi few sila ka doctor, but they exist and they are very kind.

Sige, here is how this works.

What a developmental pediatrician does

A dev-ped (short version) is an MD who:

  • Reviews your child\'s history (pregnancy, birth, milestones, family medical history).
  • Observes your child playing and interacting during the consult.
  • Conducts standard screens (M-CHAT for autism, Vanderbilt for ADHD, basic cognitive assessments).
  • Coordinates with therapists (OT, ST, ABA) and refers to other specialists (psychologist, audiologist, neurologist) when needed.
  • Issues the formal diagnosis that\'s required for school accommodations, shadow teacher arrangements, and PhilHealth / HMO claims.

How to find one in Cebu

Three reliable channels:

  1. Hospital developmental pediatrics departments.
    • Perpetual Succor Hospital
    • Cebu Doctors\' Hospital
    • Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (CMS) — government, longer waits
    • UCMed (UC Medical Center)
    • Chong Hua Hospital
  2. Private clinic referrals. Most OT/ST clinics in Cebu have a list of dev-peds they regularly refer to. Ask the clinic for 2-3 names.
  3. Cebu SPED Parents Facebook groups. Recommendations from other parents are usually the warmest. Each year someone re-shares the updated list.

Note: Cebu has only a handful of full-time developmental pediatricians. Waitlists for first consultations can run 2 to 6 weeks. Book early. If urgent, the hospitals sometimes have shorter waits than private clinics.

How to prepare for the first visit

The dev-ped asks a lot of questions. Bring:

  • Milestones list. When did your child first smile, sit, walk, say first word, say 50 words, say 200 words?
  • Birth records. Were there any complications? Premature? NICU stay?
  • Family medical history. Anyone in extended family with autism, ADHD, learning differences, mental health, seizures?
  • School / daycare reports. If your child is enrolled, get a short note from the teacher describing classroom behavior and concerns.
  • Video clips (optional but helpful). 1-minute clips of typical tantrums, free play, eating, interacting with siblings. Especially useful if your child masks behaviour around new adults.

What happens at the consult

A typical first visit (60 to 90 minutes):

  1. History-taking (30-45 min). The doctor asks you the questions. Bring both parents if possible — two memories are better than one.
  2. Child observation (20-30 min). The doctor watches your child play with toys, draw, interact, follow simple instructions.
  3. Initial impressions (10-15 min). The doctor shares early thoughts. For complex cases, they recommend specific next steps — psychometric testing, OT assessment, ST evaluation, audiology.

Many cases need a 2nd or 3rd visit before a confident diagnosis. Don\'t expect certainty on visit 1.

What costs to expect

  • First consultation: ₱2,500 to ₱5,000
  • Follow-up consultations: ₱1,500 to ₱3,000
  • Psychometric testing (if recommended): ₱5,000 to ₱12,000
  • OT or ST evaluation (separate clinic): ₱1,500 to ₱3,000
  • Audiology evaluation (if hearing screen needed): ₱1,500 to ₱3,000

Many families spend ₱15,000 to ₱30,000 across the first 2 months to fully understand what is going on. After that, ongoing follow-ups are smaller.

After the diagnosis — what next

If your child gets a diagnosis (autism, ADHD, learning difference), the typical path:

  1. Therapy. OT, ST, or ABA, usually 1 to 3 sessions per week. See our therapy guide.
  2. School placement. Mainstream private school with inclusive program, or a dedicated SPED center. See /sped-cebu/.
  3. Shadow teacher (optional). If your child needs daily classroom support. See our shadow teacher guide.
  4. Regular dev-ped follow-up. Usually every 3 to 6 months in the first year. Less frequent after.

One honest thing

Te, getting a diagnosis is hard emotionally. Bisan na-prepare ka, the words "your child has autism / ADHD / etc." hit different. Give yourself a week to process before making big decisions. Most families look back and say the diagnosis was the start of progress, not the end of normal. Walang katapusan ang pag-asa para sa anak.

Frequently asked

What is a developmental pediatrician?

A medical doctor (MD) who completed pediatrics, then sub-specialised in developmental and behavioral pediatrics. They evaluate, diagnose, and guide management of autism, ADHD, learning differences, developmental delays, and behavioural conditions in children.

How is a dev-ped different from a regular pediatrician?

Regular pediatricians do general check-ups, vaccinations, common illnesses. A developmental pediatrician focuses specifically on how a child is growing in language, social, motor, and cognitive areas, and on neurodevelopmental conditions. Both are MDs.

How much does a consultation cost in Cebu?

First consultation (often 60 to 90 minutes) runs ₱2,500 to ₱5,000. Follow-ups are usually ₱1,500 to ₱3,000. Full developmental assessment (multi-session, includes psychometric testing) can total ₱8,000 to ₱20,000.

Will my child get diagnosed in one visit?

Usually not for the more complex conditions. Autism, ADHD, and learning differences usually need 2 or 3 visits plus possibly psychometric testing. First visit is mostly history-taking and observation. Decisions about diagnosis come at visit 2 or 3.

Is there PhilHealth coverage?

Limited. PhilHealth covers some inpatient developmental assessments at accredited hospitals, but most dev-ped consultations are paid out of pocket. A few HMOs cover initial consultations; check your specific plan.
