Cebu International School vs Maria Montessori International School
CIS (full IB Continuum) vs MMIS (full Montessori K-12)
Two very different early-years and K-12 philosophies in Cebu at very different price tiers. Cebu International School (CIS, Talamban) runs the full IB Continuum (PYP, MYP, DP) — inquiry-based and concept-driven. Maria Montessori International School (MMIS, Banilad) runs an authentic Montessori program from preschool through Senior High — self-directed, mixed-age classrooms with the trademark Montessori prepared environment.

Frequently asked
How are IB and Montessori different in the early years?
They share more than parents realize — both are inquiry-based, child-centered, and resist standardized worksheets. The execution differs: IB PYP at CIS organizes learning around six transdisciplinary themes ("Who we are", "How the world works") with the teacher guiding inquiries across subject groups. MMIS runs authentic Montessori with the 3-hour uninterrupted work cycle, specialized Montessori materials, mixed-age classrooms (3–6, 6–9, 9–12), and the child choosing their own work from prepared shelves. Practical test: IB feels more "teacher-orchestrated investigation", Montessori feels more "child-chosen exploration within a prepared environment".
What about the older years?
CIS transitions from PYP to MYP (Grades 6–10, project-based with subject specialists) and then the IB Diploma Programme (Grades 11–12) — a globally recognized university-prep credential with required Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). MMIS runs the Montessori adolescent program for older years, which is rarer and more progressive — emphasizing real-world projects, work-study, and civic engagement, alongside DepEd K-12 academic content. For globally portable senior-year credentials, the IB DP is the stronger signal; for a self-directed adolescent who wants depth over breadth, the Montessori adolescent track fits better.
How big is the tuition gap?
Significant. Cebu International School runs roughly ₱825,000–₱1,445,000/year across the K-12 arc — the highest tuition tier in the province. MMIS runs roughly ₱180,000–₱250,000/year. The 4–7× gap is mostly explained by CIS's full IB authorization, international teacher salaries, and operating cost of a foreign-curriculum school; MMIS prices for an authentic Montessori program in a Filipino-curriculum context. Both charge separate development / capital fees on top — budget 10–20% more than headline.
Where are they and how is the commute?
CIS is in Pit-os, Talamban (far north Cebu City) — best for Banilad / Talamban / Lahug families, 15–25 minutes off-peak. MMIS is on Gov. M. Cuenco Ave. in Banilad, slightly closer to the city center — easier from Banilad / Banawa / IT Park corridors, 10–20 minutes off-peak. Both add 30–45 minutes for cross-city peak-hour commuters.
Which is better for a child with learning differences?
Both list `hasSPED: true` in our directory — both accept students with mild learning differences under an inclusive framework. The Montessori environment at MMIS is structurally friendlier for children who need self-paced work, sensory regulation, and a quieter setting — the prepared environment + mixed-age model often absorbs neurodivergent students more naturally than a traditional graded classroom. CIS's IB inquiry model is also flexible, with documented Individual Learning Plans for qualifying students; CIS has more financial resources for in-house support staff. For an autistic / ADHD / sensory-sensitive child, ask both schools specifically about shadow-teacher policies, sensory accommodations, and IEP frameworks — and pair either with a separate OT/ST clinic per our /sped-cebu/ page.
Will my child be able to apply to overseas universities from either?
Yes from CIS — the IB Diploma is recognized by virtually every major university worldwide (UK, US, Canada, Australia, EU, Singapore). Yes from MMIS — graduates leave with DepEd K-12 + a strong Montessori adolescent program portfolio; they apply via the standard Philippine track and have placed at UP, Ateneo, La Salle, USC, and some overseas universities via portfolio-based admissions. The IB Diploma is the smoother signal for highly selective universities abroad; the Montessori path requires more legwork on the application side but has graduates at competitive universities.
Financial aid?
CIS has a limited need-based financial aid program — competitive, reviewed annually; budget the full sticker price until aid is confirmed. MMIS does not list scholarships publicly ('hasScholarship: false' in our directory) — inquire directly for any need-based or sibling-discount arrangements they may offer case-by-case. Neither participates in DepEd PEAC E-SF vouchers. Families needing aid at the early-years stage are usually better served by a mid-tier Catholic preschool with PEAC participation; see our /preschool-cebu/ and /scholarships-cebu/ pages.
